Swiss Forestry Statistics 2018 - Large timber harvest in 2018 due to bark beetles, drought and storms

Neuchâtel, 16.07.2019 - With a total of 5.2 million m3, 11% more timber was harvested in 2018 than in the previous year. The clear increase is above all due to a severe bark beetle infestation resulting from a summer drought and damage from winter storms at the start of 2018. This meant that more than 5 million m3 of wood was harvested in Switzerland for the first time since 2011. These are some of the findings from the Federal Statistical Office’s (FSO) Swiss Forestry Statistics and from the test forestry operations network run by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).
