FINMA Board of Directors: Complete renewal and election of two new members
Bern, 03.07.2019 - As part of the complete renewal elections for the new 2020-2023 term of office, the Federal Council re-elected seven previous members of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) at its meeting on 3 July 2019. Ursula Cassani Bossy, professor of criminal law at the University of Geneva, and Andreas Schlatter, former member of the Executive Board of UBS Switzerland, were newly elected to the Board of Directors.
The Federal Council took note of the resignation of FINMA Board members Yvan Lengwiler and Günter Pleines at the end of the current term of office and thanked them warmly for their services. For the new 2020-2023 term of office, the Federal Council confirmed the re-appointment of Thomas Bauer as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Marlene Amstad as Vice President, and members Franz Wipfli-Späni, Renate Schwob, Bernhard Keller, Martin Suter and Benjamin Gentsch. The new members of FINMA's Board of Directors elected by the Federal Council will take up office with the start of the new 2020-2023 term on 1 January 2020.
Ursula Cassani Bossy completed her legal studies with a PhD and qualified as an attorney-at-law in 1987. She then began her professional career as a foreign associate with a law firm in New York. She worked as a lawyer for Lenz & Staehelin in Zurich and Geneva from 1989 to 2013. She has been a professor of criminal law at the University of Geneva since 1995 and a member of the board of the law faculty's Centre for Banking and Financial Law since 2004. She worked in London as a research assistant at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and has been a judge at the Court of Appeal in Geneva since 2009. She is actively involved in various university courses on financial market law and is President of the Supervisory Board of CAS Financial Regulation at the Universities of Geneva and Bern, as well as a member of the editorial board of the Swiss Review of International and European Law and editor of the Révue Pénale Suisse (Swiss journal of criminal law).
Andreas Schlatter has a PhD in mathematics. After completing his degree at the ETH, he took up a research post for three years at Princeton University in the USA. He held various positions at UBS between 1997 and 2016. He started as a client relationship manager and held various management positions before being appointed Head of UBS Global Asset Management Switzerland in 2009. Andreas Schlatter was a member of the Executive Board of UBS Switzerland, Chairman of the Commission for Institutional Asset Management at SwissBanking and a member of the Federal Commission for Occupational Benefits Provision. Since 2016, he has been Chairman of the Board of EMERAN AG, Investment & Consulting and a member of the Board of MDPI AG in Basel (scientific publications) and Wolfram AG in Aarau (real estate). In addition, Andreas Schlatter currently serves on the boards of two UBS Group companies; he will step down from these functions at the end of 2019.
The two new members of the Board of Directors are independent of the supervised entities and will no longer perform any duties which could lead to conflicts of interest when they take up office.
