Florian Schütz to become federal Cyber Security Delegate

Bern, 14.06.2019 - Florian Schütz, latterly head of IT Risk & Security at Zalando SE in Germany, has been appointed federal Cyber Security Delegate. The Federal Council was informed of this decision of the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), President Ueli Maurer, at its meeting on 14 June 2019.

Out of the application process for the position of federal Cyber Security Delegate advertised on 11 February 2019, 37-year-old Florian Schütz emerged as the most suitable candidate. He has all the necessary skills and ideally meets the requirements set. He will take up his new position at the beginning of August.

Florian Schütz has an MA in Computer Science and a Master of Advanced Studies in Security Policy and Crisis Management from the ETH Zurich. Through his professional activity of more than eight years at RUAG Switzerland Ltd, including as Head of Cyber Security, he gained comprehensive insights into the processes and working methods of a company affiliated with the federal government, as well as the Federal Administration in general. During this time, Florian Schütz was also deployed to Israel for one year in the Business Development Cyber & Intelligence sector, where he gained significant experience and knowledge in one of the most dynamic and worldwide leading locations for all aspects of cyber security. Thanks to his last position as Head of IT Risk & Security at Zalando SE, Florian Schütz also has extensive experience in the private sector. He led a team of about 30 employees there.

As federal Cyber Security Delegate, Florian Schütz takes over the strategic management of the newly created Competence Centre for Cyber Security. In this capacity, he reports directly to the Head of the FDF. The operational unit of the Centre builds on existing competencies such as the well-established Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance (MELANI) in the FDF. The Delegate will be the point of contact for politicians, the media and the general public, will head interdepartmental committees on cyber risks and will work closely with the cantons and the business community.
