Bern, 16.05.2019 - President Ueli Maurer was received today, Thursday, 16 May 2019, by US President Donald Trump at the Oval Office of the White House for a meeting lasting approximately 40 minutes. At a press conference at the Swiss Embassy in Washington, he took a positive view of the talks conducted.

The meeting between the two presidents was already planned for this year's WEF in Davos and took place on Thursday in Washington at the invitation of the US President. At a press conference following the meeting, President Ueli Maurer underlined the very good relations between Switzerland and the USA and spoke of a meeting in a very friendly atmosphere. The President went on to say that the potential that still existed in the joint relationship had to be exploited, especially in the economic sphere and within the framework of Switzerland's good offices.

As the seventh-largest direct investor in the USA, Switzerland wants to deepen its trade relations, Maurer stressed, which is why a possible free trade agreement between the two countries was discussed at the meeting. President Trump commented positively and gave this matter good chances of being examined in greater depth.

President Trump also thanked Switzerland's for its role in exercising a protecting power mandate in Iran. Switzerland has represented US interests in Tehran since 1980. The US President also thanked Switzerland for its willingness to assume a protecting power mandate in Venezuela.
