President Ueli Maurer to visit Finland, the next holder of the presidency of the Council of the EU

Bern, 03.05.2019 - On Friday, 10 May, President Ueli Maurer will travel to Finland, which takes over the rotating six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July. The purpose of the visit is to discuss the priorities of the presidency of the Council of the EU, Switzerland’s European policy, bilateral issues and international challenges.

President Maurer will be received in Helsinki by President Sauli Niinistö. The official talks will cover bilateral issues and economic and financial matters. As well as meeting President Niinistö, Mr Maurer will also hold talks with Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and parliamentary speaker Antti Rinne, where discussions will mainly focus on matters of European policy.

The president’s programme also includes a discussion with the Finnish central bank on challenges and opportunities in the financial sector, in particular regarding the challenges of cybersecurity and the potential opportunities presented by digitalisation for the financial industry.

Switzerland and Finland enjoy close relations. Bilateral exchanges are intensive and cover a broad range of areas, particularly as the two countries often share similar positions at international level. Meetings take place at regular intervals on trade, science, innovation, defence, disarmament, sustainable development, peace policy and security.
