Daniel Thelesklaf appointed head of the Money Laundering Reporting Office Switzerland MROS
Bern, 08.02.2019 - A distinguished career in the fight against money laundering and corruption is to continue at fedpol. Daniel Thelesklaf is to take up the position as head of Switzerland’s Financial Intelligence Unit, MROS, on 1 August 2019.
It is a return for Daniel Thelesklaf. From 1998 to 2000 he headed the newly established Money Laundering Reporting Office, before leaving to establish himself as an independent consultant on combating money laundering, terrorist financing and corruption at international level. His mandates included the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Organization (UNO). Mr Thelesklaf is currently director of the Financial Intelligence Unit of Liechtenstein, chair of the Council of Europe's anti-money laundering committee, MONEYVAL, and a member of the Egmont Committee.
Combating money laundering poses various challenges. These include processing suspicious activity reports efficiently, strengthening strategic analysis, and co-operating closely with international partners and the private sector. With his undeniable expertise, experience, innovative spirit and extensive national and international network, Mr Thelesklaf is optimally equipped for the challenge.
MROS is Switzerland's reporting office for cases involving money laundering and terrorist financing. The unit is proactive, innovative and operationally independent, focusing on the needs of its national and international partners. Specialists analyse the incoming reports and refer cases where suspicion is substantiated to the relevant criminal prosecution authorities. In 2017, fedpol received 4,684 suspicious activity reports, 51 of which concerned terrorist financing. Most of the incoming reports involve suspected corruption.
