Imprisonment from 1988 to 2017 - Over 30 years the number of prisoners has increased by 50%

Neuchâtel, 05.02.2019 - Between 1988 and 2017, the number of penal institutions fell by 30% in Switzerland. At the same time, their capacity expanded by 2002 places (+37%) in response to the 50% increase in the number of prisoners over thirty years. Per 100 000 inhabitants, their number therefore increased from 70 in 1988 to 82 in 2017, according to the survey from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on imprisonment.
