Federal Council elects Benjamin Gentsch to FINMA Board of Directors

Bern, 30.01.2019 - During its meeting on 30 January 2019, the Federal Council elected the certified insurance specialist Benjamin Gentsch as a new member of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority’s (FINMA) Board of Directors. Mr Gentsch will take up office on 1 July 2019.

Benjamin Gertsch, born in 1960, is a citizen of Neunforn (canton of Thurgau) and graduated from the University of St. Gallen in 1984. After various positions in the insurance industry, he became a member of the Executive Board of Zurich Re/Converium AG in 1998, in which he was significantly involved in the initial public offering of Converium Holding AG in 2001 and the subsequent establishment of the Converium Group. Following the acquisition of Converium by the French company SCOR in 2007, he was a member of the Executive Committee and CEO of SCOR Switzerland AG until his departure in March 2018. Up until March 2018, Benjamin Gentsch also served part time on various committees of the Swiss Insurance Association (SIA), including the Reinsurance Forum and was the first president of the Reinsurance Committee founded in 2017.

Benjamin Gentsch has been elected due to his many years of experience as well as his outstanding professional qualifications and profound knowledge of the Swiss and international insurance business. He also has both strategic and operational leadership experience.

Benjamin Gentsch has been elected to the FINMA Board of Directors for the remainder of the current term of office from 2016 to 2019, which will thus have nine members again. The election of a proven representative of the insurance industry strengthens the relevant expertise in the Board of Directors.
