Federal Council appoints Daniela Stoffel as State Secretary for International Finance

Bern, 16.01.2019 - During its meeting on 16 January 2019, the Federal Council appointed Daniela Stoffel, Head of Political Staff at the State Secretariat for International Finance (SIF) and Diplomatic Advisor to the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), as State Secretary for International Finance in the FDF. She succeeds State Secretary Jörg Gasser who is leaving the Federal Administration at his own request at the end of February 2019 and would like to redirect his career. Daniela Stoffel will take up her post on 1 March 2019.

For the successor of Jörg Gasser, a person with management and professional experience in international finance and tax matters, experience in international negotiations and good networking in politics, administration and the domestic and foreign financial sector was sought for the Head of the State Secretariat for International Finance (SIF) within the scope of a public tender procedure.

Daniela Stoffel was born on 30 July 1968 and graduated from the University of Zurich in 1992 with a degree in Philosophy, Economics and German Linguistics. Accompanying her work as a University Assistant at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Zurich, she wrote her thesis in 1996. This was followed by research stays in the USA and in the UK. On 1 May 1998, Daniela Stoffel entered the diplomatic service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). After a two-year internship, she was appointed FDFA Press Officer in 2000. In September 2005, she took over as Head of Public Relations and Culture at the Swiss Embassy in Washington D.C. and in August 2009 moved to the Swiss Embassy in Berlin as Head of Economic and Financial Affairs. She was appointed Deputy Head of Mission on 1 August 2012. In 2015, Daniela Stoffel assumed a staff function in the General Secretariat of the OECD in Paris as part of a secondment. The main topics she dealt with were energy, labour, trade, taxation and investment in the context of OECD work for the G7, G20 and APEC.

Since 1 November 2015, Daniela Stoffel has been on detachment to SIF with the title of Ambassador, most recently as Head of Political Staff. Since 1 July 2016, she has also been the Diplomatic Advisor to the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF). 

Daniela Stoffel has all the prerequisites for the challenges and tasks at national and international level that SIF faces in the course of current developments. Thanks to her many years of professional experience as a diplomat for the FDFA and the FDF, she has been involved in safeguarding and dealing with current financial policy issues and challenges and has the relevant expertise. As diplomatic advisor to the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), she also played a leading role in the relevant international negotiations and contacts. As a result, she has a broad network at the political, governmental and economic levels both at home and abroad.

Daniela Stoffel is a citizen of Winterthur, in the canton of Zurich where she also went to school. She is the mother of an adult daughter.
