Federal Council to submit Global Compact for Migration to Parliament

Bern, 14.12.2018 - On 14 December 2018, the Federal Council instructed the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs to prepare, by the end of 2019, a simple federal decree enabling Parliament to decide whether or not Switzerland should sign the UN's Global Compact for Migration. This decision follows the Federal Assembly's wish expressed during the December session to be able to discuss this issue.

The Federal Council reiterated its position in favour of the Global Compact for Migration, which aims to strengthen global governance in that field and set out common parameters for regular migration, which should also lead to a reduction in illegal immigration. The Federal Council wishes to wait until the Parliament has debated the issue to take a final decision on whether or not to sign the Compact and it has thus taken the necessary measures to allow this debate to take place.

Switzerland will therefore abstain from voting at the UN on the resolution on the Global Compact for Migration and its representative will read a statement explaining Switzerland's preference to wait until Parliament has finished discussing the issue before taking a final decision.
