President Alain Berset to attend ASEM summit in Brussels

Bern, 15.10.2018 - President Alain Berset will be attending the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which takes place in Brussels next Thursday and Friday, 18/19 October. The meeting hosted by European Council president Donald Tusk and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker emphasises the partnership between Asia and Europe and the ties between the two continents.

The theme of the 12th ASEM Summit is ‘Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges'. ASEM members will be seeking to strengthen cooperation between Asia and Europe through dialogue on a wide range of themes from trade and investment, connectivity and sustainable development to measures against climate change. ASEM is also a forum for addressing issues such as terrorism, non-proliferation, cyber-security, human rights and irregular migration.

ASEM currently has 53 members; Switzerland has been part of the dialogue platform since 2012. The summit is held every two years - alternating between Europe and Asia. President Berset is expected to hold various bilateral talks with heads of state and government from both continents on the fringes of the ASEM summit in Brussels.
