Global digital cooperation: Doris Leuthard in New York

Bern, 20.09.2018 - On Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th September 2018, Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard will take part in the first meeting of the High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation in New York. This panel, which was founded on July 12 by Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, brings together 22 figures from government bodies, the private sector, the scientific community and civil society. This panel of prominent figures is to draw up specific proposals aimed at improving digital cooperation at the global level.

An inclusive, federalist and consensus-oriented political culture has enabled Switzerland to acquire expertise in the area of digital governance, expertise which Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, Head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), will contribute to this high-level panel. In this way the Confederation is strengthening its role as a credible player in this area of activity. Furthermore, the secretariat of this body is based in Geneva and New York.

The panel is headed up by Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Jack Ma, founder of the Alibaba Group. The panel's mission is to identify gaps in the current ecosystem of governance of the digital world and to formulate proposals with a view to improving digital cooperation for the benefit of all. Switzerland hopes in particular to strengthen the effectiveness of collaboration between the public and private sectors. The panel will deliver its report and its recommendations in the spring of 2019.
