Federal Council appoints Martin Schlegel as new Alternate Member of SNB Governing Board

Bern, 04.07.2018 - During its meeting on 4 July 2018, the Federal Council appointed Martin Reto Schlegel as the new Alternate Member of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) Governing Board upon the recommendation of the Bank Council. Mr Schlegel is currently Head of the SNB Branch Office in Singapore. He will take up the position as Deputy Head of Department I on 1 September 2018.

Martin Reto Schlegel is 41 years old, a citizen of Zurich and has a doctorate in economics. In 2004, he started his professional career at the SNB initially as an economist in the Research, Financial Market Analysis and Money Market units. From 2009 to 2016, he was Head of Foreign Exchange and Gold at the SNB and was responsible there for 24-hour foreign exchange trading and managing foreign exchange reserves. In 2016, he took over management of the SNB Branch Office in Singapore. From 2015 to 2016, Mr Schlegel also worked as an expert for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Since 2010, he has been a lecturer at Basel University.

Mr Schlegel will replace Thomas Wiedmer in the body of the Alternate Members of the SNB Governing Board. Thomas Wiedmer announced his resignation at the end of June. As an Alternate Member of the Governing Board in Department I of the SNB, he will be responsible for the Secretariat General, the Economic Affairs, International Monetary Cooperation and Statistics divisions. Mr Schlegel was elected to the SNB's Enlarged Governing Board for the remainder of the term of office from 2015 to 2021.
