Public energy role models increase their energy efficiency by 27.6%

Bern, 04.07.2018 - By implementing a consequent efficiency strategy, companies can save a lot of energy and money. The initiative "The Confederation: exemplary in energy" proves this. It incorporates the civil federal administration, the DDPS, the ETH Domain and the state-owned entities Swiss Post, SBB, Skyguide and Swisscom. Since 2017, Genève Aéroport and, since this year, Services Industriels de Genève (SIG) and Suva are also part of the initiative. They have all signed a joint declaration of intent with the aim of increasing energy efficiency by 25% by 2020 compared to the base year 2006. By the end of 2017, they had improved their energy efficiency by an average of 27.6% and implemented 79% of the planned joint measures. This is shown in the annual report published today. At an event at the Othmarsingen Army Logistics Centre today, the Group is providing information about its experiences and future plans. This also includes motivating other public organisations or companies to join the club of energy role models.

The civil federal administration, the DDPS, state-owned entities and the ETH Domain are jointly responsible for 2% of the overall energy consumption in Switzerland. In founding The Confederation: exemplary in energy initiative and by signing the joint declaration of intent in November 2014, these entities made plain their intention to figure as role models in the field of energy efficiency. Taking 2006 as the base year, all the actors are striving to increase energy efficiency by 25% by 2020. To this end 39 common measures were defined, and a target achievement rate of 80% was set to be achieved by 2020. In addition, each actor undertook to implement company-specific measures of which up to 15 specific measures per actor are specially evaluated for the annual report.

Geneva Airport (joined in 2017), Services Industriels de Genève (SIG) and Suva (joined in 2018) are additional partners to the initiative. Talks with further potential actors are underway at national and cantonal level.

2020 targets within reach

By the end of 2017, the entire federal energy model initiative had increased its energy efficiency by 27.6% on average (2016: 27.0%), which means the efficiency target for 2020 has already been surpassed. However, now is no time to relax because without further effort there is no guarantee that this rate can be attained, or even exceeded, in the following year. By the end of 2017, 79% (2016: 72%) of the 39 joint measures had already been implemented. The average proportion of renewable energy used in overall consumption has risen slightly to 59% at the end of 2017 (2016: 57.4%).
