Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore

Bern, 31.05.2018 - Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin will be in Singapore from 1st to 3rd of June 2018, where he is scheduled to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue, the premier security summit in the Asia-Pacific.

The summit provides an opportunity for Federal Councillor Parmelin to hold informal talks with several of his counterparts and other high-ranking government representatives and discuss various security issues. The main topics for this year's security dialogue include US leadership in the Asia-Pacific, efforts to de-escalate tension on the Korean Peninsula, key developments in Asia security, and the new dimensions of terrorist threats.

As part of its long-term commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, Switzerland has contributed armed forces personnel to monitor the ceasefire at the Demarcation Line between North and South Korea (MNSC). In addition to security matters, Switzerland has important economic and financial interests in the region.

Since 2002, the International Institute for Strategic Studies IISS has organised the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, a security policy discussion platform in the Asia-Pacific region of comparable importance to the Munich Security Conference in Europe. Delegations from some 30 countries, including Switzerland, have been invited to this year's summit.
