Switzerland condemns the violence in Gaza

Bern, 15.05.2018 - Switzerland is monitoring with concern the ongoing 'Great March of Return' demonstrations in the Gaza Strip and condemns Israel's use of force, which has already resulted in dozens of deaths, including children, and thousands of wounded.

It calls for respect for human rights, in particular the right to life and the right to peaceful protest.

As it made clear to the ambassadors of the United States and Israel in Bern yesterday, in view of the tense situation stemming in particular from the opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem, Switzerland calls on all parties to de-escalate. Switzerland also calls on the authorities in Gaza to fulfil their obligation to ensure that the demonstrations take place peacefully.

In view of the number of injured and the critical situation in hospitals in the Gaza Strip, Switzerland calls on Israel to guarantee rapid and unhindered access to all persons in need.

On 31 March, Switzerland joined the UN Secretary-General's call for an independent and transparent investigation into the events that have taken place in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks. Today, it reiterates the need for such an investigation.
