Farm structure census 2017 - Fewer farms, more and more organic production

Neuchâtel, 08.05.2018 - (FSO) – Switzerland had 51,620 farms in 2017, i.e. 643 fewer than in 2016 (-1%). They farmed a utilised agricultural area of 1.05 million hectares and employed 153 900 people, a number that was stable compared with the previous year. Although the majority of these farms (43 600) still have cattle, dairy cow numbers continue to fall (-1%). The success of organic production is going from strength to strength. 6 638 farms apply organic practices (+5%). These findings are based on the farm structure census 2017 compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
