President Alain Berset to pay presidential visit to Latvia next week

Bern, 07.05.2018 - On 13 and 14 May, President Alain Berset will be visiting Latvia, which is celebrating the centenary of its independence. The visit by President Berset is intended to recognise the excellent relations between the two countries and further build on them.

Topics on the agenda for the official talks between President Berset and President Raimonds VÄ“jonis are set to include bilateral relations, particularly cooperation at international level, and exchanges on regional neighbourhood policy. The talks will also provide an opportunity to discuss the state of relations between Switzerland and the EU, as well as other topical European issues. The programme includes events a number of events at Riga Castle and a ceremony to mark the centenary of independence at the National Library.

Switzerland and Latvia enjoy longstanding ties which stretch back much further than the state's declaration of independence in 1918. A Swiss consulate was established in Riga as early as 1868. More recently, the excellent political relations were further deepened through cooperation under Switzerland's contribution to the enlarged EU. In economic terms there is still potential for more intensive exchanges, although bilateral trade in both directions is currently developing rapidly, as is Swiss investment in Latvia.
