Switzerland welcomes the rapprochement between North Korea and South Korea

Bern, 27.04.2018 - Switzerland recognises the historic character of the inter-Korean summit which took place today at Panmunjom between the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in, and the Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-un. It welcomes this rapprochement.

Switzerland especially welcomes the commitment of the two leaders to establish a lasting peace on a denuclearised Korean peninsula.

Switzerland, which has had a military presence in the village of Panmunjom since 1953 under the aegis of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC), has long been committed to promoting peace and dialogue on the Korean peninsula.

Switzerland firmly believes that a solution to the nuclear and security issues on the Korean peninsula can only be found within the framework of an inclusive diplomatic process. This is why it encourages the parties to pursue the dialogue in a constructive spirit, as they have committed themselves to do today, and as is envisaged for the summit between US President Donald Trump and the Leader  of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-un.

As in other regions in the world where there are tensions, Switzerland is always ready to offer its good offices or to facilitate contacts between the parties concerned if they so wish.
