Christine Schraner Burgener appointed UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Myanmar

Bern, 26.04.2018 - The FDFA welcomes the UN Secretary-General's decision to appoint Ambassador Christine Schraner Burgener as his special envoy for Myanmar. This is further proof of the excellence of Swiss diplomacy.

Ambassador Schraner Burgener will carry out her mandate in a personal capacity and will regularly inform the UN Security Council about the situation in Myanmar. She brings many years of experience at the FDFA to this task, including as Switzerland's ambassador to Thailand from 2009 to 2015. She joined the diplomatic service in 1991 and has been the Swiss ambassador to Germany since 2015.

Switzerland sees this appointment as a recognition of its engagement as a member of the UN: since joining the UN, Switzerland has consistently worked as an active and impartial member of the organisation for the implementation of the principles set forth in the UN Charter, in particular the peaceful settlement of disputes and the prevention of future conflicts and crises.

Switzerland has supported Myanmar's democratic transition process since it was launched almost a decade ago and has long been involved in development cooperation in the areas of employment and vocational education training, agriculture and food security, health, social services and local governance, as well as peacebuilding, elections and protection.
