Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer at G20 finance minister meeting in Buenos Aires

Bern, 19.03.2018 - Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will take part in the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors under the Argentinian G20 presidency in Buenos Aires on 19 and 20 March 2018. Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan will accompany him. The main topics of discussion will be the global economic situation and the international tax and financial regulation agenda.

At the invitation of Argentina, which is assuming the G20 presidency in 2018, Switzerland will participate for the third consecutive time in all meetings of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, in the preparatory meetings of the deputy ministers and in the working groups dealing with financial and monetary issues. Topics will be the global economic situation, monetary policy and the tax and financial regulation agenda, with a focus on digitisation.

Switzerland will speak in particular in favour of open markets and against protectionism in the financial sector and reiterate the need for a solid framework for sustainable growth. With regard to digitisation, Switzerland will emphasise its opportunities and the importance of observing possible risks carefully. Furthermore, the digital economy should be taxed according to criteria that are broadly coordinated internationally and are sustainable in the long term. In the area of financial regulation, Switzerland is generally committed to the agreed standards being implemented. Finally, Switzerland is working for improved correspondent banking relationships.
