Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer receives Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Kazakh Finance Minister

Bern, 02.02.2018 - On 2 February 2018, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer received the Austrian Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache and the Kazakh Finance Minister Bakhyt Sultanov on visits to Bern.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer and Finance Minister Bakhyt Sultanov discussed the global economic outlook and economic developments in Europe and Central Asia. They also discussed the opportunities for cooperation between the finance ministries within the scope of the 2014 memorandum of understanding between Switzerland and Kazakhstan. Finance Minister Sultanov was accompanied by a delegation from the Kazakh Ministry of Finance which met on 2 February 2018 to exchange with experts from the Federal Department of Finance (FDF).

A further topic was the long-standing cooperation between the two countries in international financial institutions. Kazakhstan is part of the Swiss constituency in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and in the World Bank, the so-called Bretton Woods institutions. The Swiss constituency also includes Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Serbia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer, in his capacity as Vice President of the Federal Council, received the Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for the Civil Service and Sport of the Republic of Austria, Heinz-Christian Strache on his inaugural visit at his request, as is concurrent with the good neighbourly relations which exist between the two countries. For his part, the President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset met the Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the new Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on his first visit to Vienna on 9 January 2018.
