The Federal Council is reducing the licence fees for mobile radio frequencies

Bern, 08.11.2017 - The licence fees for mobile radio frequencies which will be used for future mobile radio technology (5G) are being reduced. On 8 November 2017 the Federal Council amended the Ordinance on Fees in the Telecommunications Sector accordingly.

As a result of the revision of the Ordinance, the licence fees for mobile radio frequencies in the 3 GHz range are being set at a level which is customary internationally. These frequencies are of great importance for the rapid introduction, i.e. the construction and operation, of the future 5th generation (5G) mobile radio networks from 2019 onwards. The Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) is currently preparing the allocation of the corresponding frequencies which will be available in the future. The amended ordinance, adopted by the Federal Council, will enter into force on 1 January 2018.

The fees for frequencies in high frequency ranges will be reduced in order to take into account the less favourable propagation characteristics compared with the lower frequencies in use to date. The new high frequencies are suitable for expanding the capacity of the mobile radio networks, but they are less suitable for mobile radio coverage inside buildings.
