Alain Berset to travel to Mexico for a meeting with President Peña Nieto

Bern, 22.08.2017 - Federal Councillor Alain Berset will travel to Mexico from Thursday to Saturday. During his visit he will meet President Enrique Peña Nieto and the secretaries of foreign affairs, health, finance, education and culture. The visit includes the signing of three agreements relating to cinema, the transfer of cultural property and bicultural schools.

The vice president of the Federal Council will be hosted jointly by President Enrique Peña Nieto and Luis Videgaray Caso, Secretary of Foreign Affairs. The talks will focus on the fruitful cooperation between the two countries, further strengthened by the signing of the three agreements.

Mr Berset and Maria Cristina Garcia Cepeda, Secretary of Culture, will sign two cultural agreements. The agreement on cinema establishes the conditions for co-productions between the two countries. The bilateral agreement on the transfer of cultural property serves two purposes: to protect the cultural heritage of a foreign state, and to conserve Switzerland's cultural heritage. It includes provisions concerning the exchange of information and collaboration in the fight against the illegal transfer of cultural property.

A third agreement will be signed with the Aurelio Nuño Mayer, Secretary of Education, on the side lines of Mr Berset's visit to the Swiss School of Mexico City. This agreement establishes the framework for the management of Swiss bicultural schools in Mexico. It also concerns curricula and the recognition of qualifications. The three Swiss schools in Mexico bring together more than 1,400 pupils, 20% of whom are Swiss.

Mr Berset will also meet with José Narro Robles, Secretary of Health, to discuss obesity and measures in Switzerland related to nutrition. Cooperation between the two countries in the fight against drugs is also on the agenda. A meeting is also scheduled with José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, Secretary of Finance. Mr Berset will give a presentation on the retirement provision system in Switzerland.
