Switzerland welcomes approval of UN resolution regarding the Statistical Commission’s work on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

New York, 06.07.2017 - On 6 July 2017 the UN General Assembly approved the statistical resolution entitled “Work of the UN Statistical Commission pertaining to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Switzerland made a decisive contribution to the approval of this resolution and was actively involved in its elaboration.

This resolution gives the UN Statistical Commission, the national statistics offices as well as the international organisations concerned, a clearly defined mandate to develop the fundament for the global monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It comprises 231 global indicators devised by a group of experts for the monitoring of the 2030 Agenda. The resolution recognises that national data from official statistics offices should form the basis for these indicators.

In addition to the adoption of the global indicators, the UN General Assembly also welcomed the Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data. This global action plan sets out priority areas in which more investment must be made in the coming years, so that as many as possible of the global indicators can be produced worldwide.

For Switzerland, the resolution's approval is an important step towards realising the 2030 Agenda. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) have been working in close cooperation since the development and negotiation of the 2030 Agenda. This has enabled Switzerland to take a key role in international discussion concerning the implementation and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals from the outset.

As Vice-Chair of the UN Statistical Commission and member of the UN High-level group on Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Switzerland will continue to take an active part in the next stages of implementation.
