State Secretary Mauro Dell’Ambrogio meets with the Governor of Massachusetts

Bern, 13.06.2017 - State Secretary Mauro Dell’Ambrogio met Charlie Baker, the Governor of Massachusetts, on 12 June as part of a courtesy visit. During the meeting the two men discussed the close ties between Switzerland and the State of Massachusetts, particularly in the fields of education, research and innovation. They stressed the intensive collaboration between their leading universities, which are among the best in the world, as well as the importance of developing the flow of talented minds in the years to come.

Massachusetts and Switzerland are world leaders in the field of innovation: the state in the northeast of the USA has repeatedly been ranked in the State Science and Technology Index as the most innovative in the country, and has one of the highest concentrations of public and private education institutions, research centres and academic health centres. In combination with record spending on Research & Development of 5.86% of Gross Domestic Product (Switzerland: 3.4%) Massachusetts is a pool of talent and an innovation hotspot. Furthermore, both Switzerland and Massachusetts are important centres for the biotechnology and medtech industries.

At the end of the meeting Mauro Dell’Ambrogio introduced Governor Baker to the new Consul and CEO of swissnex Boston, Christian Simm, who will take over from Felix Moesner in August 2017. The Greater Boston Area is where the first swissnex office was opened. Over the past 17 years swissnex Boston has established itself as valuable institution in the local innovation and higher education ecosystem.
