Federal Chancellor Guy Parmelin to attend the Asia Security Summit in Singapore

Bern, 01.06.2017 - Federal Chancellor Guy Parmelin travels to Singapore from 2 to 5 June, where he is scheduled to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue 2017 and pay a bilateral working visit to the Singapore Armed Forces.

Since 2002, the International Institute for Strategic Studies IISS has organised the Shangri-La Dialogue, a security policy discussion platform in the Asia-Pacific region of comparable importance to the Munich Security Conference in Europe. Delegations from some 30 countries, including Switzerland, have been invited to this year's summit.

The 2017 security dialogue will consider topics including the US role in the Asia-Pacific, the mechanisms for regional security and crisis management, nuclear threats, emerging geopolitical change and technologies.

The summit also provides an opportunity for Federal Chancellor Parmelin to meet several of his counterparts for informal discussions. In addition, Mr Parmelin will give the welcoming address to guests at the annual gala of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

Following the Shangri-La Dialogue, on 5 June the Head of the DDPS will visit the Singapore Armed Forces. Talks during the working visit will focus on cyber defence, procurement, the conscript system and compulsory military service. The programme also includes a business lunch with Second Minister for Defence Ong Ye Kung, and a troop visit at the training centre for Singaporean recruits.
