Allocation of new mobile radio frequencies: consultation launched

Biel/Bienne, 31.05.2017 - New mobile radio frequencies will become available from 2019. The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) is therefore launching a consultation regarding how the new resources should be allocated. The Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) commissioned the consultation, which runs from 31 May to 31 July 2017.

The volume of data transmitted on mobile networks is constantly increasing. This is due to the increasing use of mobile internet, attractive offers for data subscriptions and the increasing number of smartphones, tablets and other internet-connected devices and items (Internet of Things).

As a result of these developments, the transmission capacity of mobile networks must be increased. The next mobile radio generation with higher bandwidth, 5G, is expected to be launched soon. Appropriate frequencies were determined at the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference in November 2015 and will be available in the near future.

On behalf of the ComCom, the OFCOM is therefore performing a consultation on the allocation and use of the new mobile radio frequencies. The frequency bands involved are 700 MHz, 1400 MHz and 3400 – 3800 MHz, which are expected to be available for use from 2019 onwards. The consultation is the first stage in the preparatory work for the allocation of the new mobile radio frequencies.

The consultation will gather the opinion of interested parties on the allocation of new frequencies, in particular mobile operators, system manufacturers, associations and cantonal conferences. The comments will be incorporated when drafting the invitation to tender. The consultation runs from 31 May to 31 July 2017.
