Farm structure census 2016 - Fewer but bigger farms

Neuchâtel, 11.05.2017 - (FSO) – Switzerland had 52,263 farms in 2016, i.e. 990 fewer than in 2015 (-1.9%). The total utilised agricultural area (1.05m hectares) remained stable whereas 153,400 jobs were counted in agriculture, i.e. a drop of 1.3% compared with the previous year. During the same period, the number of dairy cows fell by 1.3%, reaching 575,800. These findings are based on the farm structure census 2016 compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
