Appointments, retirements and conferring

Bern, 02.12.2016 - A number of personnel changes will be made in 2017 in the Swiss representations abroad and at the head office of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The changes will take place as part of the usual transfer rotation and on the basis of appointments made by the Federal Council. The appointment of heads of mission abroad becomes effective following approval by the respective host state. The Federal Council thanks those ambassadors entering retirement for their services.

Daniel Hunn, currently deputy head of mission in Washington, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Republic of Djibouti, the Republic of South Sudan and permanent observer to the African Union, based in Addis Ababa.

Markus Dutly, currently head of mission in Riga, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Ghana, the Republic of Benin and the Togolese Republic, based in Accra.

Konstantin Obolensky, currently deputy head of the Human Security Division and head of the Human Security Section I at the Directorate of Political Affairs in Bern, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Estonia and the Republic of Lithuania, based in Riga.

Dominique Paravicini, currently deputy director of the Directorate for European Affairs in Bern, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Turkey.

René Holenstein, currently head of mission in Bishkek, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Véronique Hulmann Marti, currently head of cooperation at the SDC cooperation office in Jerusalem, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Kyrgyz Republic.

Markus-Alexander Antonietti, currently head of mission in Prague, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Peru.

Daniel Cavegn, currently deputy head of mission in Abuja, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of the Sudan and the State of Eritrea, based in Khartoum.

Monika Schmutz Kirgöz, currently consulate general in Istanbul, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Lebanese Republic. She will succeed Am-bassador François Barras, who will retire.

Fabrice Filliez, currently deputy head of the Tax Division at the State Secretariat for International Financial Matters (SIF) in Bern, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, based in Singapore. He will succeed Ambassador Thomas Kupfer, who will retire.

Markus Leitner, currently head of mission in Cairo, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Paul Garnier, currently head of the Swiss liaison office in Ramallah, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Pietro Lazzeri, currently deputy head of mission in Rome, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, based in Yaoundé.

Martin Michelet, currently deputy head of mission in Warsaw, will become the new head (with the title of ambassador) of Switzerland’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris.

Didier Pfirter, currently head of mission in Montevideo, has been appointed commissioner for the organisation of the 33rd International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference, which will take place in Geneva late autumn 2019. To allow him to carry out this new function, the Federal Council has conferred on him the title of ambassador.

Corinne Cicéron Bühler, currently deputy head of mission in Tel Aviv, has been appointed assistant director and head of Division II: International Law, International Treaties and Law on Transborder Relations at the Directorate of International Law in Bern. To allow her to carry out this new function, the Federal Council has conferred on her the title of ambassador.
