Official visit by Didier Burkhalter to Tunis on 8 November 2016

Bern, 07.11.2016 - The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs will travel on Tuesday 8 November to Tunisia, where he will meet with President Beji Caïd Essebsi and hold the first political consultations with Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui.

These discussions are taking place within the framework of the approach outlined during the state visit by the Tunisian president to Switzerland in February this year. On that occasion, four declarations of intent were signed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in a number of areas, including in particular programmes to support the transition to democracy in Tunisia after the 2011 revolution, the functioning of the migration partnership launched in 2012, economic relations, prevention of violent extremism, scientific collaboration and education, as well as the issue of restitution of illicit assets.

Switzerland's main interest lies in supporting stability efforts in the country, and its activities therefore focus on assistance with the transition to democracy, support for the creation of jobs, and managing migration. It aims in particular to create prospects for young people and it is with this in mind that Mr Burkhalter will visit activities in the country of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation: a project to support business start-ups and a project encouraging participation in public life.
