Syrian conflict: Switzerland welcomes the agreement concluded between the United States and the Russian Federation aimed at restoring the cessation of hostilities

Bern, 10.09.2016 - On 9 September 2016, the US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov reached an agreement in Geneva over the details of a ceasefire in Syria, particularly in the city of Aleppo, aimed at the reduction of violence and the resumption of political talks.

Switzerland welcomes the conclusion of this agreement, which should in the first instance facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and alleviate the suffering of the civilian population. "The ceasefire must actually contribute to the efforts of the international community, and particularly of the United Nations, to find a negotiated solution to the conflict that has been ravaging the country for over five years," noted Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, who was in touch with the two ministers and sent them a personal message of congratulations.

Switzerland is already making its technical expertise and good offices available to the UN by hosting the talks on its territory. Switzerland remains ready to provide the basic conditions to ensure that the talks can be resumed as soon as possible.
