Bern, 11.07.2016 - On 12 and 13 July 2016 in Almaty, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will take part in the meeting of the Swiss constituency in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank together with Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank. The meeting will take place for the first time in Kazakhstan, which has belonged to the constituency since 2010. Prior to the ordinary meeting of the constituency, a seminar will be held on the issue of the future economic, social and environmental challenges facing the countries of Central Asia. Following the meeting, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will visit other member countries of the constituency.

At the invitation of the authorities of Kazakhstan, a meeting of the Swiss constituency in the Bretton Woods institutions will take place from 12 to 13 July 2016. Firstly, the finance ministers and central bank governors of the member states will discuss how the region's economic, social and environmental challenges can be overcome in the years ahead. The ordinary meeting of the constituency will focus on the key policy issues at the IMF and World Bank. On 13 July, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will also meet representatives of Swiss companies in Almaty.

Following the constituency meeting, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer will visit Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan from 14 to 16 July. He will be informed at first hand by the respective Heads of State, as well as his counterparts and other authorities about the financial and economic policy challenges these countries face. Meetings with representatives of Swiss companies are planned there too.

Switzerland is a member of a common constituency in the Bretton Woods institutions along with Poland, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic and, albeit only in the World Bank, Uzbekistan. Constituency meetings take place roughly every two years outside the customary meetings of the ministerial committees of the IMF and World Bank.
