Federal Councillor Leuthard in Berlin and Rotterdam for Gotthard base tunnel events

Bern, 16.06.2016 - In the next few days, Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard will be attending two events focusing on the Gotthard base tunnel. The “Soirée Suisse Gottardo” will be held on 17 June 2016 in Berlin, and Switzerland is to host a special event in Rotterdam on 20 June 2016 within the framework of the Transeuropean Transport Networks Conference (TEN-T Days).

The opening of the Gotthard base tunnel has attracted great attention throughout the world. In view of this, the Swiss Confederation aims also to draw attention outside the country to the opportunities the new railway line through the base of the Alps opens up for the population and the economy.

Swiss representations abroad are organising a variety of events in cooperation with “Presence Switzerland” (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA). On 17 June 2016, a “Soirée Suisse Gottardo” will be held at the residence of the Swiss Ambassador in Berlin, attended by Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard and German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt. On 20 June 2016, Federal Councillor Leuthard will be attending the Transeuropean Transport Network Conference (TEN-T-Days) in Rotterdam, organised by the EU Commission and the Netherlands (as holder of the Council presidency). In addition to the European transport ministers and representatives of European institutions, numerous representatives from the rail transport and logistics sectors are expected to attend the conference. More than 2,000 participants have registered for this event. Switzerland is organising a special evening event dedicated to the Gotthard base tunnel and its significance for the Rotterdam to Genoa goods transport corridor. The tunnel, which was officially opened on 1 June 2016, is an embodiment of Switzerland’s innovative capacity, precision engineering and reliability.
