Switzerland and the UN organise the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism

Bern, 01.04.2016 - A high-level conference on preventing violent extremism is to take place in Geneva on 7-8 April 2016. The conference is being jointly organised by Switzerland and the UN. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will open the ministerial segment of the conference on 8 April.

The Geneva Conference marks an important milestone in highlighting and comprehending the multifaceted nature of the prevention of violent extremism as a contribution to the efforts in countering terrorism. Building on the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism published in December 2015, the aim of the conference is to help bring together the positions and fields of operation of the various actors working for peace/security, development and human rights in a complementary and collaborative way, and thus address the drivers of violent extremism.

Preventing violent extremism is an integral part of Switzerland's engagement for peace and sustainable development. International Geneva will have the opportunity to step up its contribution to prevention efforts in the area of human rights, peace support and conflict resolution, as well as development cooperation, for example within the framework of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) or the Geneva Centres.

This global event will be an opportunity for states, international and regional organisations, and civil society to voice their opinions on preventing violent extremism and on the UN Plan of Action. The first day of the Conference on 7 April 2016, will be dedicated to a meeting of senior experts..

On 8 April the high-level segment of the conference will be opened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, providing a forum for ministers and high-level representatives of relevant UN bodies, as well as international and regional organisations to talk on the issue.
