WTO to build on Nairobi success

Bern, 23.01.2016 - Invited by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, Ministers in charge of WTO affairs met today in Davos, Switzerland. At an informal gathering chaired by State Secretary Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, Ministers discussed the way ahead in WTO negotiations following the 10th WTO Ministerial Conference held in December 2015 in Nairobi.

22 WTO Member States represented at Ministerial level as well WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo attended the meeting in the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Ministers expressed their deep appreciation to the Government and people of Kenya for their warm hospitality and excellent organization of the 10th WTO Ministerial Conference and welcomed the substantive outcomes adopted in Nairobi. They were in agreement that timely implementation of the Nairobi decisions would be a priority for WTO.  

Ministers called for in-depth discussions to be engaged on how to advance the WTO's negotiating agenda and deliver further meaningful results in the future. They concurred that work should build on the successes achieved at the last two WTO Ministerial Conferences, with a view to maintaining the Multilateral Trading System's key role for Member States and responding to global needs.
