Eugenio Figueredo agrees to extradition to Uruguay

Bern, 11.11.2015 - At a hearing Eugenio Figueredo, former vice-president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and former vice-president of FIFA, agreed to be extradited to Uruguay. The Uruguayan embassy in Bern submitted a formal extradition request to the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) on 13 October 2015, and provided further information on 3 November 2015.

The FOJ approved Figueredo's simplified extradition to Uruguay, albeit subject to the resolution of priority between the Uruguayan and the equally valid US request. It will be for the US authorities to state whether or not they agree to Uruguay being given priority. If the US authorities do not agree, the issue will be decided by the FOJ. The FOJ had previously approved Figueredo's extradition to the USA on 17 September 2015. The former soccer official then lodged an appeal against the ruling with the Federal Criminal Court.

In common with their US counterparts, the Uruguayan criminal prosecution authorities suspect Figueredo of having abused his office for personal gain. He is alleged to have taken bribes worth millions of dollars in connection with the award to a US sports marketing company of rights to the broadcast of soccer games.
