Scientific cooperation with Russia: 25 new joint research projects approved

Bern, 28.10.2015 - The 2nd meeting of the joint committee of the Scientific and Technological Cooperation Programme Switzerland-Russia took place in Moscow on 26 October, as part of the scientific and technological cooperation agreement signed in December 2012. Switzerland was represented by a delegation comprising representatives of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the academic world, led by Ambassador Mauro Moruzzi, head of the International Relations Division of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation.

At the meeting, 25 joint research projects for the 2013-2016 period were approved, covering fields such as robotics, bioinformatics, political science and literature. The call for joint research projects with the Russian Federation, which was launched in February of this year and which has just closed, was managed using a common procedure by the SNSF and two Russian research agencies (the Russian Foundation of Basic Research and the Russian Foundation for Humanities) as well as the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

Over the course of the 2008-2012 period, a first bilateral, Swiss-Russian programme led to the funding of 24 joint research projects and 150 academic exchanges between universities in both countries.

In the context of international research cooperation, Switzerland is currently cultivating in-depth scientific and political relations with seven non-European priority countries – namely Brazil, China, India, Russia, South Africa (including research institutes in Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania), as well as Japan and South Korea.
