Commemorative plaque on summit of Dunantspitze

Bern, 30.08.2015 - This past Sunday a commemorative plaque honouring the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Henry Dunant, and the humanitarian values which he defended and which Switzerland holds dear was placed on the summit of the Dunantspitze by a mountain guide from Zermatt, Simon Anthamatten, ICRC legal adviser Laurent Gisel, and Ambassador Nicolas Bideau, head of Presence Switzerland, of the FDFA.

On 6 October 2014, the former President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, and the Commune of Zermatt renamed the Ostspitze the "Dunantspitze" in honour of the founder of the ICRC and to commemorate the adoption of the First Geneva Convention 150 years earlier. The Dunantspitze (4,632 m) is Switzerland's second highest peak after the Dufourspitze, which is right next to it. The two summits are located on the Monte Rosa massif.
