Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf attends meeting between German-speaking finance ministers

Bern, 25.08.2015 - Today, Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf took part in an informal working meeting between German-speaking finance ministers in Salzburg. She discussed current financial and fiscal policy issues with her counterparts Wolfgang Schäuble (Germany), Hans Jörg Schelling (Austria), Adrian Hasler (Liechtenstein) and Pierre Gramegna (Luxembourg).

The topics addressed at the long-established meeting between German-speaking finance ministers included the current status of the OECD talks on new international rules for the taxation of companies operating internationally and the implementation of the global standard for the automatic exchange of information in tax matters.

The discussions also covered the possible consequences of a European banking union for Switzerland's financial centre and the financial situation in Greece.

Federal Councillor Widmer-Schlumpf said that she very much appreciated the exchanges in the context of this meeting, not least because both EU member states and third countries were represented. In connection with the discussion on the European banking union, she pointed out that Switzerland had issued strict regulatory provisions relating to systemically important banks at an early stage. Furthermore, she emphasised that Switzerland actively participates in drawing up standards within international bodies on tax issues and that it is important that these standards are complied with by all so that a level playing field exists.
