Federal Councillor Burkhalter on official working visit to Liechtenstein

Bern, 25.06.2015 - On 26 June 2015, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, is being welcomed for official talks in Vaduz by Aurelia Frick, the Liechtenstein Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Culture. Mr Burkhalter will also pay a courtesy visit to the head of the Liechtenstein government, Adrian Hasler.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein maintain very close, neighbourly relations that are characterised by an intricate set of bilateral agreements and by a common economic and currency zone in particular. In addition, around 10,000 people commute from Switzerland every day to go and work in Liechtenstein. As Liechtenstein belongs to the European Economic Area (EEA), there are a number of issues that require pragmatic solutions to be developed between the two states on a regular basis.

The talks between Mr Burkhalter and Ms Frick will also focus on bilateral topics. In addition, the two foreign ministers are expected to discuss the situation in Europe, Switzerland’s and Liechtenstein's policy on the EU and measures taken by the Federal Council to implement the new constitutional provision on immigration. International and multilateral topics including the subject of security are also on the agenda. Switzerland and Liechtenstein work closely together at the multilateral level, as can be seen by the number of joint initiatives the two countries have taken in recent years within the framework of the UN and in the field of international criminal justice.
