Population projections for Switzerland 2015-2045 – Considerable ageing of the population over the next 30 years

Neuchâtel, 22.06.2015 - (FSO) - The future development of the population will depend on Switzerland's socio-economic and political development. Based on hypotheses prepared with experts from the federal administration, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) has calculated a new series of scenarios. If the hypotheses come true, the Swiss population will continue to increase during the next 30 years, growing from 8.2 million permanent residents at the end of 2014 to 10.2 million in 2045 according to the reference scenario. This increase will largely be due to migration and to a lesser extent due to a surplus of births over deaths. The ageing of the population will speed up and be considerable during this period.
