Emin Huseynov arrives in Bern after 10 months at Swiss embassy in Baku

Bern, 13.06.2015 - Mr Emin Huseynov, a human rights defender who took refuge in the Swiss embassy in Baku 10 months ago, has left Azerbaijan. He arrived early Saturday morning at Bern airport, where he was received by staff from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

Mr Huseynov entered the Swiss embassy on 18 August 2014, saying he feared for his safety. Switzerland allowed him to stay on the embassy grounds for humanitarian reasons until a satisfactory solution could be found between him and the Azerbaijani authorities seeking to question him.

The FDFA mediated between Mr Huseynov and the authorities in Baku.

Mr Huseynov arrived in Switzerland together with Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, who represented Switzerland at the opening ceremony of the first European Games on Friday evening. Some 130 Swiss athletes are competing in the games.
