Bern, 18.02.2015 - The Federal Council today extended the term of office of Professor Patrick Aebischer, president of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), until 31 December 2016. The decision follows the unanimous motion in favour of re-election presented by the ETH Board and reflects the wish of the EPFL president to hand over to a successor in two years’ time. The Federal Council thanks Patrick Aebischer for his invaluable contribution to Switzerland’s standing as a location for education and research.

The Federal Council today re-elected Patrick Aebischer as president of the EPFL for a limited term of office until 31 December 2016. This corresponds with the unanimous motion of the ETH Board and reflects Patrick Aebischer's own wishes. It also allows sufficient time for a successor to be found. The Federal Council will name the new EPFL president in due course following the recommendation submitted by the ETH Board.

Patrick Aebischer (*1954) was appointed president of the EPFL by the Federal Council on 14 May 1999 and has been re-elected on three occasions. During his time in office he has overseen the successful renewal and continued development of the EPFL. After 15 years at the helm of the EPFL, it is Patrick Aebischer's wish to initiate the hand over of management responsibilities in good time. The Federal Council thanks him for his services to the institution and to education and research in Switzerland.
