Federal Council condemns attack in Paris

Bern, 07.01.2015 - On behalf of the people of Switzerland, the Federal Council extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims of the attack on the editorial office of the magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The Federal Council is dismayed and shocked by the attack on the office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo in which at least 12 people were killed and many others wounded. On behalf of the Federal Council, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Simonetta Sommaruga, condemns the attack as a violation both of human rights and of the freedom of speech and the press, saying that the attack shows that these fundamental rights and freedoms cannot be taken for granted in western democracies and must be defended by all possible means.

On behalf of the people of Switzerland the Federal Council extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims and the whole French nation. President Sommaruga has addressed a letter of condolence to the President of France. The Swiss foreign minister, Didier Burkhalter, has also expressed his condolences to his French counterpart Laurent Fabius.
