ETH Domain: new buildings and renovations in 2015
Bern, 20.06.2014 - The listed building complex of the machine laboratory/district heating plant of ETH Zurich will be renovated and extended: for this and for various other renovations and new buildings, the Federal Council is applying to Parliament for 233.4 million francs for the 2015 construction programme of the ETH Domain.
The 2015 construction programme for the ETH Domain includes two large-scale projects of ETH Zurich. The first project concerns the listed building complex of the machine laboratory/district heating plant in the centre of Zurich, which will be comprehensively renovated and extended. The second large-scale project encompasses new buildings of the Agrovet-Strickhof in Lindau-Eschikon. In addition, several further renovations in the ETHÂ Domain are in the pipeline. These credit lines, for which the Federal Council is seeking approval from Parliament, are based on the ETH Board's 2013-2016 Strategic Plan for the two Federal Institutes of Technology and the four research institutions of the ETH Domain.
ETH Zurich: renovation/extension of the machine laboratory/district heating plant
The listed building complex of the machine laboratory/district heating plant by Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in the centre of Zurich bears witness to the architecture of the 1930s. The teaching wing was renovated in 2000 and the machine laboratory 2 in 2006; the rest of the complex is in need of renovation: the structures and the technical installations will be renovated in keeping with the general conditions imposed by built heritage conservation, and fire prevention and quake protection will be updated to current requirements. To extend the floor space, various extensions and installations will be effected in several parts of the building. The share of the Confederation for which a funding commitment is being requested amounts to 94 million francs. Overall costs will amount to 125 million francs. The renovation and extension work will commence in mid-2015 and is expected to be concluded at the end of 2020.
ETH Zurich: Agrovet-Strickhof
With the new buildings in Lindau-Eschikon, ETH Zurich and the Canton of Zurich will jointly implement their strategy in the fields of agricultural sciences and animal health while creating a research institution of Europe-wide significance. The sustainably built office and laboratory block will satisfy Minergie standards.
The share of the Confederation for which a funding commitment is being requested amounts to 25.4 million francs. Overall costs will amount to 35.4 million francs. Construction work will start in January 2015; the buildings will be operational from early 2017.
Global credit for further building projects
A global credit of 114 million francs in total for projects that cost less than 10 million francs individually will also be used to carry out smaller renovation projects within the whole real estate portfolio of the ETH Domain (balance sheet value 4.4 billion francs).
