(Last modification 22.05.2014)

Bern, 22.05.2014 - Today, in the presence of Federal Councillor Alain Berset, the Federal Office of Culture FOC presents the inaugural Swiss Theatre Awards as part of the 1st Swiss Theatre Encounter at the Theater Winterthur. In addition to the previously announced Swiss Grand Award for Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring for Omar Porras, Nikola Weisse and Fabienne Hadorn receive Outstanding Female Actor accolades. A further five Swiss Theatre Awards 2014 go to Massimo Furlan, Beatrix Bühler and the festival auawirleben, Milo Rau, Cristina Castrillo, and the junges theater basel.

As already announced, Omar Porras receives the Grand Award for Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring: https://www.news.admin.ch/message/index.html?lang=en&msg-id=52724. This carries prize money of CHF 100,000 and upholds the tradition of the Hans Reinhart Ring, which is awarded by Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Theaterkultur (SGTK) [Swiss Society for the Dramatic Arts]. At the award ceremony, Porras accepted the customary specially made, personalised ring from Anne Fournier, Co-Chair of the SGTK. A publication by the SGTK will appear at the end of the year, as the latest in the Swiss Theatre Yearbook series.

Two awards for “Outstanding Male and Female Actor”
The Swiss Theatre Awards 2014 also include two honours in the “Outstanding Male/Female Actor” category. These go to two women: Nikola Weisse has worked at various theatres in Switzerland, including under Christoph Marthaler at the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Theater Basel, since 1971. She can be seen at the Swiss Theatre Encounter on 29 May in Marthaler’s “Das Weisse vom Ei/Une île flottante”. Fabienne Hadorn has been working as an actor, singer, lyricist and dancer since 1998 and established the independent group Kolypan. Each award carries prize money of CHF 30,000.

Five “Swiss Theatre Awards 2014”
A further five awards go to individuals and institutions that have made an outstanding contribution to the dramatic arts in Switzerland. The awards carry prize money of CHF 30,000 for individuals and CHF 50,000 for institutions.

Massimo Furlan works in Lausanne and produces projects spanning multiple genres that are unique in the Swiss theatre world. His production “Giacomo”, about the Italian motorcycle legend Giacomo Agostini, can be seen at the Theater Winterthur on 30 May as part of the 1st Swiss Theatre Encounter.

Beatrix Bühler/auawirleben: Beatrix Bühler has guided the small but highly regarded theatre festival auawirleben, which takes place each spring in Bern, for almost 30 years. Director, curator, networker and talent scout, she is a selfless, unprejudiced yet partisan advocate of the Swiss theatre scene.

Milo Rau established the re-enactment as a political theatre format. Projects such as “Hate Radio” and the “Moskauer Prozesse” attracted international attention and provoked much debate. Born in Bern, he founded the International Institute of Political Murder (IIPM) in Cologne in 2007. He produces works for stage and screen and teaches at universities and colleges of art.

Cristina Castrillo comes from Argentina and has exerted a lasting influence on the drama scene in Ticino with her Teatro delle Radici, which was founded in Lugano in 1980. In addition to her politically committed works, since 1990 she has offered annual seminars for international theatre practitioners at her Scuola Laboratorio Internazionale.

junges theater basel: Since it was set up in 1977, the junges theater basel has been the go-to venue for up and coming dramatic talent in the Swiss city, making its mark far beyond Basel and indeed Switzerland. It stages professional performances for young people and organises drama courses for students aged between 14 and 24 at which they can put their theatrical skills to the test.
