Imprisonment and juvenile detention 2013 – Maximum capacity reached in prisons; decrease among minors
Neuchâtel, 27.01.2014 - (FSO) - On the reference day of 4th September 2013, 7072 adults were detained in prisons and detention centres in Switzerland. Officially, the prisons have capacity for 7048 persons. 51% of inmates were convicts subject to custodial sentences and measures. 30% of detainees were in pre-trial detention. 141 persons were held in custody. The number of detained minors, however, fell by around a quarter since 2011.
