Switzerland strengthens its commitment to employment and social rights within the ILO

Bern, 07.02.2013 - On 11 February, Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER, will meet the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, Guy Ryder who will pay a working visit to Bern to strengthen Switzerland’s commitment to the ILO.

Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann will present the ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, with a document affirming Switzerland’s ratification of the ILO’s Employment Policy Convention (No. 122). This Convention encourages signatories to put in place a framework to implement economic and social policies aimed at promoting full, productive and freely chosen employment. By ratifying this Convention, Switzerland is demonstrating international solidarity and wishes to share with the ILO, and its members, its positive experiences regarding economic policy, education and training, and the labour market.

Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and the Director-General will sign an agreement intended to strengthen cooperation between Switzerland and the ILO in the field of technical cooperation. With this agreement Switzerland and the ILO aim to strengthen worker protection, promote the distribution of profits from the textile trade and encourage human progress, social and economic development in developing countries.

The bilateral meeting between Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and the ILO Director-General will also provide an opportunity to discuss the following issues: the employment situation around the world and in Europe, the role of the ILO in the multilateral system, the challenges facing the organisation, Switzerland’s priorities at the ILO, progress regarding the complaint lodged with the ILO by Swiss trade unions and the importance of the institution for International Geneva.

The ILO Director-General will also meet various members of the Federal Assembly.
