Business demography: survival rate of businesses founded between 2003 and 2007 – One in two businesses folds five years after foundation

Neuchâtel, 11.12.2009 - (FSO) - The 2008 federal business census shows that 81% of businesses founded in 2007 are still operating one year after their creation. Five years after their creation, the survival rate of businesses founded in 2003 falls to 50%. However, although the number of surviving businesses decreases over the years, those that do survive tend to create new jobs, thus compensating partly for jobs lost. The survival rates of businesses in the secondary sector are higher than those of tertiary sector businesses. These are the main results of the survival rate of new business statistics 2008, compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
